HISTORY:

In 1907, Cavaliere Ugo Stella, a Milan aristocrat and French car maker Alexandre Darracq founded the company “Darracq Italiana”, which started producing Darracq cars in Naples. With the end of the partnership, Stella, with the financing of other Italian investors, moved the production line to a decommissioned factory in Portello, a suburb of Milan, changing, at the time, the company’s name to ALFA – Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. The first car produced entirely by the company was the model 24 HP of 1910, designed by Giuseppe Merosi (having this name due to the power generated by its engine). Subsequently, Merosi participated in the development of new ALFA cars, with more powerful engines, from 40 to 60 hp. ALFA also ventured into auto racing, with drivers Franchini and Ronzoni participating in the 1911 Targa Florio driving 24 HP models. However, with the start of World War I, production was paralyzed for 3 years.

Nicola Romeo took over the company in 1916 and converted the company into a war factory to meet the needs of Italy and its allies during World War I. Ammunition, engines and parts for airplanes, generators and compressors based on previously produced car engines and even locomotives were produced by ALFA during the war. With the end of the war, Nicola Romeo took full control of the company, and car manufacturing resumed in 1919. In 1920 the company name was changed to Alfa Romeo, and the 20 to 30 HP Torpedo was the first car manufactured under the new brand. Giuseppe Merosi continued as chief designer and the company continued to produce good street cars and successful race cars (among them the 40-60 HP and the RL Targa Florio).

In 1923, the then pilot of the Alfa Romeo team, Enzo Ferrari, convinced Vittorio Jano to abandon FIAT and replace Giuseppe Merosi in the Alfa Romeo design team. The first model designed under Jano’s supervision was the P2 Grand Prix, which gave Alfa Romeo the world title of 1925. For street cars, Jano developed a series of small, medium, 4, 6 and 8-cylinder inline engines based on on the P2 engine that established Alfa Romeo’s classic engine architecture: Light alloy construction, hemispherical combustion chambers, centrally plugs, two in-line valves per cylinder and double combustion chamber. Such architecture proved to be durable and powerful.

In 1928 Nicola Romeo left the company, when it went bankrupt. In 1933 Alfa Romeo underwent an intervention by the Italian Government, which took control of the company. Alfa Romeo became an instrument of Mussolini’s Italy, a National Emblem.

During World War II, the Alfa Romeo factory was bombed and at great cost it was profitable again after the war. He stopped making luxury cars, dedicating himself to the mass production of popular cars.

In the 1960s Alfa Romeo became famous for its small cars and models designed especially for the Italian police – “Pantere” and Carabinieri; among them the glorious “Giulia Super” or the 2600 Sprint GT that received the expressive nickname “Inseguimento” (for being mistaken for the car used by the famous police officer, and unmatched driver Armandino Spadafora in the chase for thieves by a ladder in 1960. Actually the car used was a black Ferrari 250 GT / E). This photo of a Giulia, one of the dozens on the legend, was taken from a film.
