The Audi 100 is an E-segment passenger car with longitudinal front engine and front wheel drive produced by the German automaker Audi between the years 1968 and 1995. The model in its sports and luxury variants was marketed as the Audi 200.
In 1995, the 100 was renamed the Audi A6, which subsequent generations kept. The origins of the first Audi 100 have become a legend in Germany. When Volkswagen bought Auto Union from Mercedes-Benz in 1965, they appear to have been motivated by a severe shortage of production capacity for their Type 1, a model that at the time was selling faster than cars could be produced.
The 100 C3 model was sold in the United States as the Audi 5000 until 1988. The Audi 100 was one of the safest cars of the time. In Spain the 2.2 and 2.0 were sold, sharing the latter with the Audi 80.
