The Audi R8 is a mid-engine sports car from the automaker Audi unveiled to the public in September 2006. The production vehicle is based on Audi’s successful Le Mans prototype whose name originated from the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
From autumn 2006 to the end of 2014, a total of 26,037 first-generation R8s were produced, of which, according to data from the Federal Office of Circulation, 626 units were registered in Germany. The second generation of the R8 has been produced since 2015. At the beginning of 2019, a redesign of the second generation was carried out.
The car is designed, developed and manufactured exclusively by Audi AG’s private subsidiary company that manufactures high-performance automotive parts, Audi Sport GmbH (formerly quattro GmbH), and is based on the platform of the Lamborghini Gallardo and currently that of the Huracán6. The fundamental construction of the R8 is based on the Audi Space Frame, 1 and uses an aluminum monocoque that is manufactured using space mesh principles. The car is manufactured by Audi Sport GmbH in a new renovated factory at Audi’s ‘aluminum site’ in Neckarsulm in Germany.
At Audi’s annual conference in 2019, CEO Abraham Schot announced that the Audi R8 needed to be tuned as part of a reorientation of the brand’s models.
First generation (2006–2015: Typ 42)
The Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans quattro prototype car (designed by Frank Lamberty and Julian Hönig) first appeared at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show and the Frankfurt Motor Show that same year. The R8 business model was officially launched at the 2006 Paris Motor Show on September 30. There was some confusion regarding the name, which the car shares with the R8 Le Mans (LMP) prototype winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Initial models included an R8 4.2 FSI coupe (with V8 engine) and an R8 5.2 FSI coupe (with V10 engine). Convertible models, called Spyder by the manufacturer, were introduced in 2008. Followed by a high-performance GT model introduced in 2011. Motorsport variants of the R8 were also subsequently introduced beginning in 2008. An all-electric version called the e-Tron began its run. development but only reached its production stage when the second generation of the model was introduced.
6-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx described the R8 as «the best-handling commercial car today.»
The car received a redesign in 2012 and a new model called the V10 Plus was added to the offering. Production of the Typ 42 ended in August 2015.
