Formally The Austin Motor Company Limited was an English company, a manufacturer of motor vehicles. Founded by Herbert Austin in 1905, control of the company was shared with Morris Motors Limited in 1952 in a new “holding company” called The British Motor Corporation Limited, in which both Austin and Morris maintained their own identities.

The Austin brand was used until 1987, and is now owned by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) after being transferred from a bankrupt subsidiary, Nanjing Automotive, which had acquired it together with the MG Rover Group in July 2005.

After some incipient experiences and the manufacture of three automobiles between 1895 and 1899. In 1901, Herbert Austin began to develop a more professional work. In 1905, with the support of the Vickers brothers, and funding from Harvey du Cros, in November he acquired the facilities of a disused printer in the small village of Longbridge in Worcestershire. The following month The Austin Motor Company Limited was incorporated. In April 1906, a large number of drivers went to Longbridge to see Austin’s new car, a conventional four-cylinder model in two versions: 15/20 hp for £ 500 and 25/30 hp for £ 650. The only dealer to sell the vehicle was Mr Harvey Du Cros junior.

Austin’s cars were luxurious. The list of clients included: Russian Grand Dukes, Princesses, Bishops, high officials of the Spanish government and a long list of members of the British nobility. In February 1914, Austin already manufactured many models including: tourism, limousines and coupes with engines of 15, 20, 30 and 60 hp. Ambulances and commercial vehicles were also available. Austin became a publicly traded company in 1914, and the capital went up to £ 650,000. At the time its production placed it in the fifth position in the British ranking.

Austin Motor Co. grew enormously during the First World War, fulfilling government contracts for airplanes, armor, heavy weapons and generator sets, in addition to 1,600 three-ton trucks, most of which were shipped to Russia. [4] The number of employees has grown from around 2,500 to 22,000. Success continued in the interwar period (1919–1939). During World War II, Austin continued to build cars, but also trucks and planes including Lancaster bombers. Some changes and technical developments in the automobile sector during the 1960s began to affect business. In the 70s things started to go wrong, and in the 80s the brand practically disappeared.
