The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car created by Chevrolet in 1953. It is manufactured today by an exclusive factory in Bowling Green (Kentucky) by General Motors. It was the first entirely American sports car manufactured by an American company. It is also today the car that has been in production for the longest time since 1953. It is also known for being “cheap horse” as it costs around 70 to 100 thousand dollars in its best version, which is a much lower value than competitors such as Ferrari, Lamborghini among others, and has a similar performance and in some cases superior. The National Corvette Museum is a museum dedicated to the car, also located in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Currently Chevrolet has launched yet another generation of the Chevrolet Corvette C7, with the ZR1 version being the most powerful of the brand’s entire sports division, featuring a 6.2-liter V8 SuperCharger engine that yields more than 750 horsepower and torque over 100kgfm.


Second generation (C2; 1963–1967)

The second generation brought together two different concepts. First, the Corvette SS, developed by Arkus-Duntov in 1957 to compete in competitions, which was abandoned after GM stopped racing. Enhanced with its own resources by designer Bill Mitchel, it gave rise to the 1959 Corvette Stingray Racer Concept Car. Second, the 1957 Q-Corvette by Peter Brock and Chuck Pohlmann. With engineer Ed Cole at the helm, Chevrolet joined the models and developed the XP-720 coupe.

The second generation, designed by Larry Shinoda and worked in the wind tunnel of the California Institute of Technology, started in 1963 and ended in 1967. In 1963, the Corvette Stingray (coupe based on the Mako Shark I concept car) was introduced to the market, with raised fenders, split bumpers, and split rear window (inspired by the Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic [2]). For safety reasons, the rear windows were replaced by a solid one in 64, and due to the lack of ventilation in the car due to the rush of the project, fans were installed behind the seats in the same year. The 1963 ‘‘ 327 ’’ engine had 320hp and reached 205 km (homemade tuning).

The following year the car gained four-wheel disc brakes, in addition to a new V8 engine (6,478 cm³), which produced 425 hp and a torque of 55 kgf. One of the main reasons for the designers was to make the Stingray compete on tracks with the same level as the legendary Shelby Cobra, which had a Ford V8 427, of the same power.

In 1967, Duntov and his team launched the L88 model, equipped with the V8 427, a 7.0-liter (6,999 cm3) big-block, which used aluminum heads and three Holley double-body carburetors. It is said that it actually reached 550 hp, but the factory declared only 430 hp, to comfort insurers. There were also changes in appearance, with a central air intake that joined the crease of the hood. Of the 28,000 Corvettes sold that year, only 20 were of this version. The model was piloted by Dick Guldstrand and Bob Bondurant at Le Mans, setting the speed record on the Mulsanne straight at 274.4 km / h (although it did not end the race). The 1967 L88s are currently valued at up to $ 650,000.
