Dino was the brand that Ferrari used to designate the rear transmission sports models, created from 1968 to 1976. The name Dino was used for cars that had engines of less than 12 cylinders, using the Ferrari brand for the V12 and flat 12 . The Dino brand was later withdrawn, reverting to the traditional nomenclature. It was an attempt by Ferrari to create a series of relatively inexpensive sports cars, using parts from other vehicles.

The nomenclature used in the Dino was based on the engine displacement and the number of cylinders, thus, the 246 would be a car with a 2.4-liter 6-cylinder engine.

The Dino 246 was the first large-scale Ferrari model produced. It is praised by many for its intrinsic driving qualities and innovative design. In 2004, Sports Cars International chose the Dino 246 in fifth place on the list of the best sports cars of the 70s. Motor Trend Classic, placed the 206/246 in sixth place in the ranking of the 10 best Ferraris of all time.
