Lotus Cars is a British manufacturer of sports and racing cars, based in Hethel, Norfolk, England.
The company was founded as Lotus Engineering Ltd in 1952, by engineer Colin Chapman. In 1954 the company split up, with the emergence of Team Lotus, which would then actively participate in Formula 1 racing. The Lotus Group was formed in 1959 and comprised Lotus Cars Limited and Lotus Components Limited. While the first focused on street cars, the second produced racing cars. In 1971 Lotus Components Limited became Lotus Racing Limited but the company was closed down in the same year.

In 1986, the company was purchased by General Motors. On August 27, 1993, it was sold for £ 30 million to A.C.B.N. Holdings S.A. de Luxembourg, a company controlled by the Italian Romano Artioli, owner of Bugatti Automobili SpA. In 1996 most of the company was sold to the Malaysian company Proton. In 2017, Chinese company Geely acquired Lotus Cars.
